Dr. Jonathan D. Moreno ‘73 is the David and Lyn Silfen University Professor at the University of Pennsylvania. He holds a joint appointment in the Department of History and Sociology of Science (School of Arts and Sciences) and in medical ethics in the School of Medicine.
Dr. Moreno is also a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress in Washington, D.C., and a visiting professor of biomedical ethics at the University of Virginia. From 1998 to 2006, he held the Emily Davie and Joseph S. Kornfeld Chair in Biomedical Ethics at the University of Virginia.
He earned a B.A. in philosophy and psychology from Hofstra University in 1973, and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Washington University in 1977.
Jonathan is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies and has been a member of numerous National Academies committees. He co-chaired the Committee on Guidelines for Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research. He has served as a senior staff member for two presidential advisory committees and has given invited testimony for both houses of Congress.
Dr. Moreno is a past president of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities. He is an adviser to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and GlaxoSmithKline. He is also a faculty affiliate of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University, and a Fellow of the Hastings Center and the New York Academy of Medicine. He has published more than 250 papers, reviews and book chapters, and is a member of several editorial boards. He is a frequent guest on news and information programs and is often cited and quoted in major national publications.
