Curriculum
The ESL Curriculum includes 7 proficiency levels, and it follows ACTFL proficiency guidelines. Each level takes one-semester to complete. English Language Placement Exams
The English language placement exams helps us to place students in the right level and understand the best ways to support the success of international students at Hofstra University.
The English language placement (ELP) exams are offered online, and include the following:
- Oral Proficiency Exam
- Writing Placement Exam
- WHAT ARE MY ENGLISH LANGUAGE PLACEMENT EXAMS?

International students will be scheduled for an Oral Proficiency Exam with an ESL faculty for 15 min long. Also, they will be scheduled for a Writing Placement Exam which includes 4 questions. You are expected to answer the 4 questions in an hour.
- WHO IS REQUIRED TO TAKE THE ENGLISH PLACEMENT EXAMS?

All international graduate and undergraduate students are required to take an internal English Placement Exams at Hofstra University unless they qualify for an exemption.
- WHO CAN BE WAIVED FROM TAKING THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE PLACEMENT EXAM?

Applicants who receive one of the following scores are exempt from taking the English as a Second Language Placement Exams prior to enrolling at Hofstra University:
a TOEFL score equal to or higher than 110 iBT; a combined IELTS score of 8.0 or higher; a score of 620 or higher on the SAT Verbal section. A score of at least 28 on English and Writing on ACT
- HOW DO I GET SCHEDULING DETAILS ABOUT THE EXAMS?
- ELP scheduling details for oral proficiency exam and the writing placement test will be sent to you via email.
- HOW LONG DOES THE PLACEMENT TEST TAKE?

- The Oral Proficiency Exam takes 15 minutes long.
- The Writing Placement Exam is an hour long.
- CAN I USE A DICTIONARY IN THE WRITING PLACEMENT EXAM?
- Dictionary use is not allowed during the writing exams.
- WHAT IS THE FORMAT OF THE WRITING PLACEMENT EXAM?
- The exam will include four prompts. You are expected to complete the four questions in an hour.
- HOW CAN I FIND OUT MY EXAM RESULT?
- Your advisor will discuss the placement exam results with you.
- HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE TEST?
- There is no preparation for the English Language Placement exams.
- IS THERE A FEE FOR THE ELP EXAMS?
- There is no additional fee.
