Bio

C.V. Starr Distinguished Professor of Finance and International Financial Services

Dr. Nikbakht received his doctoral degree (DBA) in finance from the George Washington University in 1982. He earned an M.B.A. at the Iran Management Center in 1975 and a B.A. at Tehran Business School, Iran in 1972. He holds a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. He is a certified Financial Risk Manager (FRM) awarded by the Global Association of Risk Professionals, and a certified Professional Risk Manager (PRM) by the Professional Risk Managers' International Association.

Dr. Nikbakht holds a sustained research portfolio in finance including 17 refereed journal articles, 2 books, 4 book chapters by Oxford University Press, and 27 peer-reviewed paper presentations. His latest research focused on volatility transmission across markets for the periods before and after the global financial crisis. He directed 13 academic conferences at Hofstra and currently serves as the Program Chair of the 24th Annual Global Finance Conference. Dr. Nikbakht is on the editorial board of the Global Finance Journal and was on the board of advisers of the Journal of International Financial Engineering. He was the editor of the Hofstra Business Review, and an advisory board member of the International Association of Financial Engineers. In recognition of his research book titled Foreign Loans and Economic Performance, published by the Praeger Special Studies, Dr. Nikbakht received a Stessin Prize for “Outstanding Scholarly Publication.”

Dr. Nikbakht was voted as an Executive MBA Teacher of the Year and awarded a Dean's Award for "outstanding teaching and service." He has integrated the use of Bloomberg Financial Data into his investments and portfolio courses. He has taught in the Hofstra/Erasmus joint program in the Netherlands, the EAFIT University in Colombia, and the Jundishapur University in Iran. Formerly a Department Chair, Dr. Nikbakht also served as Associate Dean of the Frank G. Zarb School of Business.

Dr. Nikbakht was appointed as Chair of the Derivatives Committee of the New York Society of Security Analysts, a professional society of more than ten thousand CFA charterholders. He has delivered numerous educational presentations at major financial institutions including Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, S&P, PNC, Royal Bank of Canada, Merrill Lynch, Legg Mason, State Street, and Deutsche Bank.
