Bio

Dr. Smith received a Ph.D. in organization theory from Syracuse University and specialized in organizational behavior and the strategic management of change, innovation and creativity. His teaching and research interests are in the management of innovation for sustainability, in the philosophy of science, and in systems theory applications to group and organizational development.

Dr. Smith has been a comptroller and general manager, auditor, financial manager, and operations analyst in industry. He was formerly a faculty member at Syracuse University and first taught at the United States Army Intelligence School. He served in the United States Army as an Intelligence specialist in Seoul, Korea, 1969-70.

His most recent articles appear in The Journal of Applied Behavioral Science, World Futures, Systems Research, Human Relations, Vision/Action, Organizational Dynamics and New Management. He served for a number of years as the Spirituality and Systems Group of the International Society for the Systems Sciences.

Dr. Smith consults to organizations in the areas of leadership skills and group and organizational development. He is on the boards of trustees of for-profit and not-for-profit corporations, and facilitates community workshops on humanistic and Jungian psychology, meditation and creativity. He is the co-author, with Felicia Norton, of An Emerald Earth- Cultivating a Natural Spirituality. Published by Twoseasjoin Press, (ISBN: 978-0-6152-3546-2].

Dr. Smith served from 1988 to 1991 and 2004 to 2006 as Chairperson of the Department of Management and General Business. In 1987 he was awarded the Hofstra University Stessin Award for his article "Transformation and Regeneration in Social Systems, a Dissipative Structure Perspective," which appeared in Systems Research, Winter, 1986. In 1992 he received the M.B.A. Association Teacher of the Year award.
