Bio

Raymond N. Greenwell earned a B.A. in Mathematics and Physics from the University of San Diego, and an M.S. in Statistics, an M.S. in Applied Mathematics, and a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Michigan State University. Since 1983 he has been at Hofstra University, where he is currently Professor of Mathematics, as well as coach for the Putnam Competition team. He has published articles on statistics, fluid mechanics, mathematical biology, genetic algorithms, combinatorics, and undergraduate mathematics education. He is coauthor with Margaret L. Lial and Nathan P. Ritchey of the texts Finite Mathematics and Calculus with Applications, published by Addison-Wesley. He is active in the Mathematical Association of America, and has served the Metropolitan New York Section as Chair (1999-2001) and Governor (2002-2005). He is also a member of the Association of Christians in the Mathematical Sciences. He loves outdoor activities, including surfing, boogie boarding, hiking, and cross-country skiing, and he leads trips with the Sierra Club's Inner City Outings Program.
