Bio

Dr. Lisa Behrens has been an instructor of Theory and Ear Training at Hofstra University since 2006. She holds a PhD in Music from the Graduate Center, City University of New York. Her dissertation, “Cyclic Pitch Organization in the Twelve-Tone Music of Aaron Copland," addresses various aspects of the American composer’s compositional technique. She also holds a Master of Applied Theory and Analysis and a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music (QCM) at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia. Dr. Behrens has presented scholarly papers for the Australian Musicological Society, the Society for Music Theory (SMT), and the Music Theory Society of New York State (MTSNYS). She has also served as Secretary of MTSNYS.

Dr. Behrens, originally from New Jersey, established herself in the Australian commercial music industry, where she worked full-time as a pianist/vocalist entertainer and as a studio musician. She held residencies at major venues such as the Brisbane Club and Fisherman’s Wharf on the Gold Coast, and was a regular entertainer at such venues as the Brisbane Hilton and Sheraton Hotels. Dr. Behrens was also in high demand as a principal backing singer and arranger of backing vocals at all of the major recording studios and television stations, where she was regularly engaged as Principal Backing Singer and Arranger for local and national productions such as telethons and variety shows. In addition, Dr. Behrens became a theory instructor on the faculty of the QCM, and was the Piano Instructor at the Ormiston School, an elite private academy for K-12 students on the Gold Coast. Since returning to the United States, Dr. Behrens has taught at Rutgers University, City College of New York, Hunter College, John Jay College, Brooklyn College Conservatory, and Baruch College.
