Our Administrative and Support Staff

Terence Ryan, Director

B.S., athletic administration; M.S., elementary education, St. John’s University; P.D., supervision and administration, Dowling College. Former teacher and assistant principal in the Levittown and Valley Stream School Districts. Former middle school football, basketball, softball and baseball coach, and former high school basketball coach. Former assistant for Hofstra Men’s Basketball. Adjunct faculty, St. John’s University and Farmingdale State University. Sixteen years summer camp experience; 13 years experience at Hofstra Summer Camps.

Kerry Jansen, Camp Health Director

RN, BSN, Adelphi University. Sixteen years at Mercy Medical Center. Six years working for the Nursing Sisters. Currently working as the Head Nurse for Sewanhaka High School.

Julie Duenges, Director of REACH / Pupil Services

Julie Duenges is a board-certified behavior analyst with more than 10 years of experience in designing and implementing educational and recreational programs for students with autism and other disabilities. In 2007, Julie created, and continues to supervise, the REACH Program for Hofstra Summer Camps. She received a master’s degree from Teachers College, Columbia University, and an advanced degree in teaching students with autism from Brooklyn College. She is currently a special education teacher in the Herricks School District’s STRIVE program, designed specifically for educating children with autism spectrum disorders. Julie has served as senior ABA therapist and family trainer for Variety Child Learning Center in Syosset, recreational director for United Cerebral Palsy in Staten Island, and dance instructor for Camp ANCHOR of Lido Beach. She has seven years experience at Hofstra Summer Camps.

Joanna Perrella, Associate Director of REACH / Pupil Services

Joanna Perrella holds a B.S. in health education and biology and an M.S.Ed. from Hofstra University. She is a special education teacher at Centereach high school in the Middle Country School District, and has experience teaching biology, anatomy and physiology, and environmental science to students with disabilities. Currently she is the associate director of pupil services for Hofstra’s REACH program for students with autism and other disabilities. Joanna Perrella has six years of experience with Hofstra Summer Camps.

Bradley Kaye, Administrator

B.A., history and English, Hofstra University. Assistant director of lifelong learning and community programs, PEIR at Hofstra University. Former educator, Port Washington School District. Hofstra University paralegal graduate, New York state-certified coach, Certified EMT. Thirteen years experience at Hofstra Summer Camps.

Jessica Hansen, Assistant Director of Saturday Classes for Young People / Recreation Director

Assistant Director of Saturday Classes for Young People B.A., elementary education and psychology; M.S., special education, Hofstra University. Former teacher, Hewitt Elementary School, Rockville Centre, New York. Assistant Director of Saturday Classes for Young People at Hofstra University. Thirteen years experience at Hofstra Summer Camps.

Jeremy Melnick, Recreation Director / Co-Director of Reach for Teens

B.A., child psychology, University of Rhode Island; L.M.S.W., child clinical social work, Fordham University. Certified in child and family counseling from Fordham University; Certification in school administration SBL/SDL, Stony Brook University. Certified teacher of NYS SAVE Program (Safe Schools Against Violence Education). Certified instructor of the CPI Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training Program; former director of the Sid Jacobson JCC special services programs and director of Camp Kehilla (a camp for children and teens with special needs). Currently a school social worker in the Smithtown Central School District. Fourteen years experience at Hofstra Summer Camps.

Danna Steppe, Swim Director

BA Elementary Education, CW Post LIU, MS Physical Education, Hofstra University. Certified Physical Education, Brooklyn Preparatory High School (NYC). Athletic Director for Harry Van Arsdale Campus, as well as coach for Co-Ed Double Dutch Team. WSI-certified, CPR/AED and First Aid Certified. Over 20 years of camp staff experience and 3 years with Hofstra Summer Camp.
