Internships

Invitation from Joseph Fichtelberg, Chair

The English Department offers students broad and focused instruction in writing, critical thinking, and research—skills valuable not only for careers in education, but also for work in a wide range of businesses. Our graduates have gone on to positions in public and private schools; in federal and state government; in advertising, publishing, and law; in freelance work and in creative writing. Many have earned graduate degrees in English, Education, and related fields.

To help prepare students for these many roles, the English Department supports numerous activities. Those interested in graduate study may choose to write an Honors research essay or work on a creative manuscript. Students concentrating in Publishing Studies routinely intern at major publishing houses and publications in New York. Majors in other concentrations have secured numerous internships as well, in companies like ABC and CBS News, and in publications like Oprah, Cosmopolitan, and Vogue. The Department regularly sponsors events in which professionals and graduates discuss career opportunities and network with students. For those interested in graduate school, we hold workshops and guide students through the application process. We encourage students to apply to our own, strong graduate program, offering an M.A. in literature and an M.A. in creative writing.
