HUHC’s First Year Cluster: Culture & Expression (C&E)

(4-8 credits on load / 19 students per section)

C&E is a unique opportunity for Hofstra’s full time faculty to engage one another in extended conversations about the intellectual issues that occupy our academic and pedagogical imaginations.  Designed to introduce HUHC’s first year students to texts, topics, ideas, and issues central to the ancient (Fall) or modern (Spring) periods, these courses are staffed by teams of up to 14 faculty with background or training in the humanities and social sciences.  Throughout the semester we model the kind of intellectual engagement we hope to inspire in our students by public presentations, small group discussions, and an ongoing conversation (over food and drink) amongst ourselves.

Team members assemble a semester’s list of readings and other objects of study.  Each faculty member leads either one or two discussion sections of 20 students.  Faculty working in any liberal arts field, period, methodology or geographic area are welcome.  C&E meets in the TR 11:10-12:35 and 12:45-2:10 time slots.
