These graduate programs and courses are offered by the Long Island, New York campus of Hofstra University.
The Marriage and Family Therapy courses are taught through seminars, clinical courses, and supervised internships. The curriculum is specifically designed to expose students to an increasingly more sophisticated theoretical base, beginning with traditional family therapy schools and culminating in constructivist/social constructionist approaches.
All clinical field placements receive live supervision, one hour per week of individual supervision and one hour per week of group supervision. Students are prepared for their field placement by practicing role plays and viewing videotapes.
In addition to the Master's Degree and Professional Diploma programs, Hofstra offers four additional advanced training certificates. They are the Certificate in Family Therapy, the Advanced Certificate in Sex Therapy, the Advanced Certificate in Divorce Mediation and the Advanced Certificate in Addiction Studies. The courses in these programs may be taken by our graduates or by practicing professionals in the field. In addition, there is an advanced supervision course which allows students to continue their studies after graduation in order to accumulate clinical status in the professional organizations.
Two summer sessions are provided for the students, along with a January session. These total 5 semesters per year. The summer sessions are usually offered either on the weekends or one night per week for a total of four weeks. These courses attract many students not only because they can accumulate credits but also because of the nearby resort areas, such as the Long Island beaches, sailboating, wineries, and proximity to New York City (30 minutes by railroad).
