REACH-TRANSITIONS (REALISTIC EXPERIENCES AT CAMP HOFSTRA)
Hofstra University Summer Camps – "Growing up and transitioning to adulthood."

Hofstra Summer Camps new REACH Program for Teens helps campers with disabilities transition to adulthood. It is often difficult for an individual with special needs to find a job, and once they find a job, can they maintain it? There are many skills one must have to maintain employment, make and keep friends, live independently, etc. Our goal is for individuals with special needs to become increasingly independent, learn the responsibilities and benefits of working, and obtain independent daily living skills. Responsibilities and tasks will be adapted to meet the needs and ability level of each participant.

This program encourages individuals with special needs to put their newly acquired skills to the test! Participants will gain confidence navigating their environment by taking field trips to local establishments, such as the post office (to mail a letter) and the bank (to open an account and learn how to write a check).

This program will include structured social activities supervised by Hofstra University Summer Camps staff. Our staff will assist students with the development of their social skills and help them make appropriate friendships with peers and adults. Hofstra University Summer Camps staff will assess how students work in a group, their interest in tasks, as well as their comprehension of tasks. All participants are supervised by a Hofstra University Summer Camps staff job coach/mentor.

Registration Information
A consultation with the director of the REACH Program for Teens will determine acceptance to the program. Please be aware that space is extremely limited. To set up an appointment for consultation or for more information, please call the Camp Office at 516-463-2267 or email Hofstrareachforteens@yahoo.com. Prior to the consultation, you will be asked to submit the most recent copy of your child’s IEP. Once approved, you will be contacted by the Camp Office to register your child; you will need to register immediately to secure your child’s place in the program. If you register without a consultation or approval, your camper may not be eligible for our staffing or consulting services. Thank you again for your interest in the REACH Program for Teens!
