Welcome To the Counselor Apprentice Program 2013

For Girls and Boys Entering 10th or 11th Grade
Session 1: July 1 - 12
Session 2: July 15 - 26
Session 3: July 29 - August 9

Note: In order to register in the Conselor Apprentice Program, you must enroll in three sessions (six weeks).

The counselor apprentice who satisfactorily completes this program will be considered for a “junior” staff position the following camp year. This appointment is based on the candidate’s performance during the training year. The program is offered not only as preparation for a future position at Hofstra Specialty Camps, but as a positive and creative summer experience.

The program has an excellent balance of workshops, seminars, observations and assistance with campers. The first week of the program is spent with the CAP group, covering several topics such as building relationships, working with campers with medical and special needs, policies and procedures, and safety.  The next three weeks are spent with CAP for half the day, learning CPR, working on physical conditioning, and participating in workshops such as bullying.  For the second half of the day, the apprentice is placed in a specialty or recreation group for practical experience. During the last two weeks of the program, the counselor apprentice spends all day working in the field and is observed and evaluated.

Note: On the first day of camp, the counselor apprentice is given a choice of three specialties; no guarantees can be made regarding placement.
