Hofstra Team Receives $290,000 NSF Grant
for Innovative Computer Education Project
A team of Hofstra Computer Science faculty has received a National Science Foundation grant to introduce entrepreneurship and leadership components into the computer science curriculum... | more |At Hofstra Univeristy’s Department of Computer Science, students can choose among multiple paths towards degrees in computer science or computer engineering. Students get a strong foundation in in programming and application development, network and software engineering, operating systems, algorithms and computer architecture. And they get opportunities to apply those skills right away, producing hands-on projects every year, including a senior design project.
This strong foundation is enhanced by a constantly expanding roster of elective courses that keep pace with the industry trends in computer graphics, computer gaming, mobile and web application, artificial intelligence, embedded systems and network security. We are completing a new, $1 million, state-of-the-art Big Data lab that will open in the fall of 2013. Students work one-on-one with our accomplished, full-time faculty in small classes or on independent study and research projects. Faculty research areas include: computer vision, cognitive neuroscience, security, software engineering, data mining, and algorithms. You also learn from a varied network of industry experts, among them a co-founder of PC Magazine. We offer three undergraduate degree programs, a dual-degree option, two concentrations in entrepreneurship and a special program that allows students to design their own program of study based on their interests. And once you begin your studies, the department offers special scholarships for promising undergraduate computer science and entrepreneurship students.
Our recent graduates have found a variety of jobs in different industries on Long Island, Manhattan, and beyond: from banking and financial institutions (Citibank, Bank of America), Amazon, Google, to game development companies, consulting firms, and start-ups. Undergraduate students interested in further studies have been accepted in master’s and doctoral programs at universities such institutions as Cornell University, Columbia University, University of California at Berkeley, Princeton University, Stevens Institute of Technology, Stony Brook University and Hofstra.
