Programs

Programs offered by the School of Education and Allied Human Services are classified as either preprofessional or professional. Preprofessional programs are for students seeking initial teacher certification or certification as a teacher assistant, whether at the undergraduate level or the graduate level. Professional programs are designed for students already certified (provisional or permanent) or experienced as teachers (e.g., in private schools, in the Peace Corps, etc.) and who wish to pursue advanced studies in a specialized field of education.

The School of Education and Allied Human Services also offers minor programs to undergraduate students interested in education as an additional field of study and inquiry. Such programs normally do not meet certification requirements. Consult individual departments for advisement.

In addition, the School of Education and Allied Human Services offers major programs to undergraduate students interested in a variety of areas in human services and health-related occupations.

Bachelor of Arts
The Department of Curriculum and Teaching offers a program leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree with a co-major in elementary education and a major in the liberal arts and sciences or a co-major in secondary education and major in the liberal arts and sciences.

Bachelor of Science

Bachelor of Science in Education
Students taking programs (art education, music education, and physical education) leading to the Bachelor of Science in Education degree, should see the appropriate department for the admission criteria.

Graduate Preprofessional Programs
Graduate Certification Programs: The Department of Counseling, Research, Special Education, and Rehabilitation offers Advanced Certification in Consultation in Special Education, and Special Education Assessment and Diagnosis; Curriculum and Teaching offers an Advanced Certificate in Educational Computer Technology; Literacy Studies offers an Advanced Certificate in Literacy Studies (B-6) or (5-12).

Master of Science in Education
These programs are designed for graduate students seeking entrance to the teaching field but who hold a baccalaureate degree in a field other than professional education. Persons already holding provisional or permanent certification as teachers and other comparable educational preparation and experience (e.g., teaching in non-public schools, service in the Peace Corps.) should select a graduate professional program.

Undergraduate Preprofessional Teacher Preparation Programs

Degree candidates are admitted after application to specific programs within the School of Education and Allied Human Services. Undergraduate degree candidates typically successfully complete a prescribed distribution of liberal arts and sciences course work, designated by each program before admission to the program. Enrollment is open to students showing qualities which indicate potential as teachers of children and youth. Judgments concerning these qualities are accumulated in reports plus field-based experiences from several of the students’ instructors, including faculty in liberal arts and education and cooperating teachers in the schools. Prospective teachers should obtain applications from the proper department in the School of Education and Allied Human Services even though initial enrollment may be in the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, New College, the Zarb School of Business or the School of Communication.
