Positions

Most of our offices and departments hire student employees who work in a variety of different capacities. Learn more about the different types of on-campus employment positions.

Undergraduate/Graduate Student Hourly

Hourly

Hourly on-campus employment provides students with the opportunity to work as a Student Aide, Tutor, or Specialized Student Assistant in a variety of areas on campus. Visit Handshake to explore available opportunities.

Eligibility

Employment is not based on financial aid status. All matriculated Hofstra students in good standing and enrolled in at least half-time semester hours are eligible for hourly wage employment as a student employee.

International students holding appropriate U.S. Department of State student visas are permitted to work on campus as student employees or through a Graduate Assistantship (discussed below) so long as they meet the requirements of their visa classification, are enrolled as full-time students, have applied for a Social Security card, and otherwise meet the eligibility requirements set forth above.

Positions

Jobs are available year-round and are posted on or through individual University departments.

Graduate Assistantships

These positions provide Hofstra matriculated, full-time graduate students with experiential learning opportunities in a variety of administrative and academic settings.

Compensation

Graduate Assistantship compensation includes both a tuition waiver and a stipend at a maximum of 12 credits and a minimum of $2000 annually.

Appointment Period

Graduate Assistantships are appointed on an annual basis.

Note: Tuition waivers are not accepted for doctoral level course work, diploma or certificate programs requiring fewer than 30 credits, the Executive MBA, School of Medicine, School of Law, or online programs offered through the School of Business.

Extracurricular

Hofstra University offers a multitude of positions generally recognized as extracurricular. These positions - which are part of your overall educational experience at Hofstra - are typically one-time and event based. Some come with a stipend. Examples of extracurricular activities include performing as a mascot at athletic events, performing in the Pep Band, performing at Commencement, or serving as an Athletic Team Student Manager.

Eligibility

The other opportunities listed below each have their own eligibility requirements. Check with the particular department to find out more information.

Leadership Positions

Serve as a leader whether it be as a Resident Assistant through Residence Life, or as an Orientation Leader or Welcome Week Coordinator through Orientation and New Student Programs.

Research Assistant/Non-Credit Academic Intern:

These positions grant students the opportunity to engage in research or a related project that complements their area of study. This work is typically done under the supervision of a Hofstra faculty member, and many are paid via stipend. For more information, inquire with your department directly about potential available opportunities.

Off-Campus Employment

The Center for Career Design and Development maintains listings of off-campus employment, including part-time and summer jobs. The Center for Career Design and Development is located in 110 Weller on South Campus, telephone 463-6060.

These off-campus jobs are available to all Hofstra students and represent opportunities in nearby business offices, shopping malls, and restaurants. Positions in other Long Island and New York City locations are also listed.

Other On-Campus Employment

The Food/Dining Services and Bookstore at Hofstra are independently managed, have their own policies, and do their own hiring. See area managers directly for employment opportunities and hiring requirements.

Internships

The Center for Career Design and Development also has information regarding internship opportunities. An internship enables students to work in a professional environment directly related to students' career goals. A variety of industries support salaried and unpaid internships. Academic credit may be made available by a department chairperson or professor.

Summer Positions on Campus

Continuing and new students may work on campus during the summer. Some positions offer full-time hours up to a maximum of 30 hours per week. Summer positions are usually posted in late April. Click on “Current Jobs” to find out about summer opportunities at that time. In addition, check with any office to inquire if they are hiring for the summer.
