In just over two years, over 100 AI-related copyright lawsuits have been filed in US courts. Most are fights between massively capitalized tech companies and well-funded copyright industry plaintiffs. But the collateral damage is already landing on researchers, educators, and libraries—through publisher restrictions on text mining, institutional policies that condition access on control over downstream use, and a broader rethinking of commitments to open access that risks closing off the very materials scholars need most. This talk examines what fair use, open infrastructure, and library values demand in response.

Speaker Bio: David Hansen is Executive Director of Authors Alliance, a nonprofit supporting authors who want their works widely distributed for the public benefit. Authors Alliance has led efforts to secure copyright exemptions for text data mining and advocated for legal access to research corpora. Dave has testified before Congress, the Copyright Office, and the USPTO on copyright, AI, and fair use. Previously, he was Lead for Copyright & Information Policy and Associate University Librarian at Duke University. He holds a JD and MSLS from UNC Chapel Hill.

Generative AI is reshaping how students approach learning, writing, and academic work, raising new questions for faculty about expectations, communication, and course design. This 90-minute interactive workshop introduces the idea of “AI-conscious teaching,” an approach that intentionally considers how generative AI may shape student learning, regardless of whether instructors choose to adopt AI, meaningfully limit it, or abstain from its use. Participants will clarify their current stance on AI in teaching, anticipate common student questions and concerns, and practice communicating expectations clearly and constructively. The session will also explore strategies for designing AI-conscious courses that are transparent, responsive, and supportive of meaningful learning in an evolving technological landscape.

SIC 200: From Awareness to Practice: Redesigning Student Work for the AI Era — Students are already using AI — but many have developed habits that undermine their own learning: accepting output uncritically, prompting poorly, and skipping the thinking that makes the work meaningful. This session brings together three faculty who are tackling that challenge head-on. Dave shares an evolving model from his Technology and Society course where AI use is required and revision is made visible through co-developed rubrics and Track Changes. Shawn offers concrete strategies for teaching students to treat AI as a thinking partner — through better prompting, iterative critique, and team-based exercises. Roberto grounds the conversation in what we know about how students actually learn with technology. Come ready to share what you’ve tried and leave with strategies you can use next week.

SIC 230: AI and the Future of Professional Judgment — As AI takes on more analytical work in fields like data science, sustainability, and supply chain management, the focus shifts to what kind of professional judgment students need to develop. Drawing on disciplines where AI already automates core tasks, this roundtable explores how to teach students not just how to use AI, but when to trust it, question it, and apply their own expertise. Emphasis is placed on case-based learning with AI, where students work through real-world scenarios, using AI alongside domain knowledge to strengthen decision-making and judgment in practice.

SIC 231: Teaching AI Across Disciplines — What Actually Works? — AI is showing up in every field — but what does it actually look like to integrate it meaningfully into a course? Katie and Hafiz draw on their experiences in accounting technologies, business analytics and responsible AI to explore what intentional AI integration looks like at the course level: what’s working, what’s not, and how we design learning experiences with AI that translate across disciplines. This roundtable invites participants to share their own approaches and challenges as we work toward practical strategies that extend beyond any single department or school.

SIC 232: Working Smarter with AI — Practical Applications for Administrative and Professional WorkFeaturing a lightning talk on using AI to develop a tenure and promotion plan

AI isn’t just transforming the classroom — it’s changing how we manage projects, organize information, draft communications, and navigate the daily complexity of university work. This session is designed for staff, administrators, and faculty who want to explore how tools like ChatGPT and other AI platforms can support the operational and professional side of academic life. Topics include using AI to plan and prioritize projects, draft and refine professional documents, build timelines, and streamline workflows — no technical background required. The session opens with a lightning talk from an early-career faculty member who recruited ChatGPT as a personal assistant for developing a tenure and promotion plan, followed by open conversation about where participants see opportunities in their own roles.
