Creative Expressions brings literacy together with creativity, communication, technology, and student choice. Each two-week program gives campers an opportunity to develop ideas, work collaboratively, and create something meaningful to share with others.
Creative Writing
Session 1 | Grades 2-5 and 6-10
Campers experience the creative writing process from generating ideas and drafting original pieces through revising, editing, designing, and publishing. Depending on the interests of the group, campers may create a literary magazine, zine, newsletter, anthology, or another collaborative publication featuring stories, poetry, articles, reviews, artwork, and illustrations. The session culminates in a publication celebration where campers can share their finished work in digital and print formats.
Journalism
Session 2 | Grades 2-5
Campers become reporters, writers, and editors as they explore the fundamentals of journalism. They learn how to find a story, conduct interviews, research topics, organize information, and write clear, engaging articles for an audience.
Working individually and as a newsroom team, campers create original features, reviews, opinion pieces, and other stories to share in an end-of-session publication or showcase.
Podcasting
Session 2 | Grades 6-10
Campers transform their ideas into original podcasts while developing skills in writing, communication, collaboration, and digital storytelling. They explore podcast formats, develop concepts, write scripts, create storyboards, practice interviewing and public speaking, and record and edit their work.
Recording takes place in the Herbert School of Communication recording studio. The session culminates in a listening showcase featuring campers' completed podcast episodes.
Inquiry Lab
Session 3 | Grades 2-5 and 6-10
Curiosity drives this inquiry-based learning experience. Campers begin with questions about topics that interest them and use reading, research, discussion, and writing to investigate possible answers.
Through age-appropriate books, articles, multimedia sources, observations, and interviews, campers learn to gather information, evaluate ideas, make connections, and communicate what they discover. Each camper or team develops a final product, such as an illustrated guide, feature article, presentation, exhibit, or digital story, to share during an end-of-session showcase.
