HUMAN FACTORS AND USABILITY STUDIES

Where People and Technology Meet
The Human Factors and Usability Studies (HFUS) program prepares students to design, test, and evaluate interactive computing technologies by placing human needs and behaviors at the center of the design process. The concepts introduced in this program extend well beyond computer–machine interfaces and apply to any field that relies on human-centered design, including health sciences, engineering, design, and marketing.
Outcomes and
Opportunities
Graduates of the HFUS program are prepared to:
- Excel in careers in user experience, human-computer interaction, usability testing, and human-centered design.
- Lead teams and projects across industries where technology and people meet.
- Pursue advanced study or launch innovative ventures in rapidly evolving fields.
What is the Career Potential for a Human Factors and Usability Studies Degree?
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, web developers and digital designers earned a median annual salary of $95,380 in 2024, with a projected job growth rate of 7%. With your Hofstra education, you’ll be ready to stand out in this competitive job market.
Human Factors and Usability Studies Programs
These program provides intensive study at the undergraduate level in the field of human factors and usability studies. The curriculum provides an excellent mix of theory, design, applications and design. The design and evaluation aspect of the degree requires the proper definition of who the user is with a broad understanding of the users’ needs and how to develop systems that consider users’ needs and requirements while having an emphasis on users’ safety, users’ performance and users’ satisfaction.
BA in Human Factors and Usability Studies
The BA program allows students greater flexibility to explore courses in psychology, design, communication skills, and accessibility.

Learn About the MinorAll degree graduates are expected to complete capstone senior design courses in their final semester. Design work delivers valuable insights into experimental methods and, in some cases, original research. Due to the flexibility of the program, students have the opportunity to develop a greater in-depth knowledge in areas related to of computer science, psychology, engineering, writing, disabilities, and graphic design.

Experiential Learning
Your studies go beyond the classroom. Through
design projects, usability testing, and senior
capstone courses, you’ll apply theory to practice —
conducting research, solving practical problems, and
making discoveries that could improve everyday life.
