The Department of English is home to accomplished scholars and writers who explore literature from Beowulf to Shakespeare to contemporary voices. With programs in literature, creative writing, and publishing studies, the department prepares graduates for a wide range of careers and lifelong engagement with the transformative power of language and storytelling.

This series brings notable authors to campus for readings and book signings open to the public. It is a unique opportunity for undergraduate creative writers to meet with high profile writers in a workshop setting.

Meet Great Writers

Hofstra English Society

The Hofstra English Society is a close-knit community of students who organize social and networking events and host readings of student work. The Society publishes the student journal Font.

Sigma Tau Delta

Hofstra is home to a chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society. The department sends invitations to eligible juniors and seniors in the spring semester.

Departmental Honors

Advanced students may choose to earn departmental honors by completing an honors project, either a researched essay or a creative manuscript. To be eligible for departmental honors, students must have completed 60 semester hours in residence at Hofstra and have a 3.5 GPA or higher in the major and a 3.4 cumulative GPA. Interested students should consult with a departmental advisor and/or a faculty member whom they would like to direct their honors project.
