Located in Monroe Hall, Hofstra’s professional-grade music studio mirrors the standards of world-class recording environments. Featuring a 32-channel Solid State Logic console, premium outboard gear, and high-end microphones, the studio combines cutting-edge technology with hands-on, faculty-guided training, preparing students with the practical skills and experience needed for today’s music industry.

Fieldwork and student teaching are core components of the music education program, giving students hands-on experience in real classroom settings. Through structured field placements and a guided student teaching semester, students apply instructional theory, develop professional skills, and gain the practical experience required for New York State teaching certification.

Music majors may complete an Honors Thesis during their senior year, focusing on one of the department’s concentrations, including music history and literature, theory, composition, music business, music education, or jazz and commercial music. Guided by a faculty advisor, students produce an advanced scholarly project that demonstrates disciplinary mastery, research skills, and engagement with relevant literature.

Augmenting the music reference and circulating collections in the Axinn Library, the Music Library’s collection of books, scores, periodicals, and sound recordings supports the curriculum of the Department of Music and provides material for general use by the Hofstra community.
