Degrees & Programs

BA or BS? Or a dual degree? If you are considering mathematics as a major, you will want to review the benefits of each available program by browsing through the course offerings. Also available is a minor in mathematics. The Department of Mathematics recently launched a Master of Science in Data Science, in partnership with the Department of Computer Science in the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science. This graduate program provides a strong foundation in mathematical and algorithmic methods, such as linear algebra, statistical inference, and optimization, advanced skills needed for successful careers in data engineering, quantitative research, machine learning, data mining, and data analytics.

Experience Mathematics Beyond the Classroom

Clubs and Organizations

Students connect outside class in the department lounge and Math Tutoring Center, as well as joining the Math Club for trips and events or the Actuarial Science Club for professional development. High-achieving students may be invited to Pi Mu Epsilon, which hosts mathematical activities and campus events.

Competitions

Students can tackle the Problem of the Month; compete in the national Putnam Competition; or join Kryptos, an annual cipher-breaking contest. Hofstra teams also participate in SCUDEM, a differential equations modeling competition, with opportunities for prizes, recognition, and valuable problem-solving experience.

Seminar Series

Mathematics students explore cutting-edge research through a dynamic seminar series featuring faculty, student, and guest speakers. Topics have ranged from predicting hospital readmissions to mosquito-borne disease modeling, sequence theory, alien math, terrorism networks, and what mathematics reveals about cancer.

Internships

Internships help you explore career paths, build your resume, and earn credit through MATH 185. In a recent survey, 56% of mathematics graduates reported completing at least one internship. Students have interned at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Lieberman Research, Merrill, Flagstar Financial, and The New York Times.
