UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS IN
Why Study Urban Ecology
Urban ecology explores how plants, animals, and people share rapidly growing cities and suburbs. You’ll study real-world ecological challenges, from wildlife appearing in suburban neighborhoods to turtles nesting in Jamaica Bay, while working alongside faculty who spend as much time in the field as they do in the classroom. Students begin hands-on research as early as their first year, contributing to projects with genuine scientific and social impact.
As sustainability becomes essential to modern life, urban ecologists study how vegetation, water systems, wildlife, and green spaces respond to pollution, development, invasive species, and climate pressures. You’ll learn how to monitor ecosystems and design more sustainable urban environments, as well as understand how nature improves both biodiversity and human well-being. It’s a field with growing demand and the opportunity to make measurable, meaningful change in the places where most people live.
Your New Field of Study
