Dr. Darren Brownlee is a distinguished healthcare executive serving as the Vice Chair of Administration and Strategic Initiatives at Mayo Clinic in Florida, where he provides executive leadership in administration, operations, and strategic growth to advance Mayo Clinic Florida’s site and enterprise objectives. He fosters cross-functional collaboration to enhance operational efficiency, drive digital transformation, and strengthen workforce development, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities in an evolving healthcare landscape. His oversight spans organizational resource allocation, process improvement, and the development of high-performing teams, positioning Mayo Clinic Florida for sustained excellence and innovation. Additionally, he leads organizational resource allocation (people, space, and technology) as the administrative leader of the Mayo Clinic Florida Operations Coordinating Group (OCG).
A former scholarship athlete, Dr. Brownlee played football at West Virginia University before earning his Master of Health Administration from Hofstra University and a Doctor of Public Health in Health Policy and Management from Johns Hopkins University. He is a proven leader in healthcare administration, specializing in strategic planning, operational optimization, financial stewardship, and advancing access to care.
Dr. Brownlee began his healthcare career at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, where he held progressive leadership roles within the Department of Surgery and Department of Medicine, managing Chairman’s Office operations and leading enterprise-wide health equity initiatives. In 2018, he transitioned to Mayo Clinic in Florida as an Operations Administrator, overseeing Dermatology, Pulmonary Medicine, Allergy, Sleep Medicine, and Respiratory Services.
Prior to his current role, Dr. Brownlee served as Senior Division Chair of Education, providing strategic oversight of Mayo Clinic Florida’s five Schools of Education (Continuous Professional Development, Graduate Medical Education, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, School of Health Sciences, and School of Medicine), as well as the Experiential Learning Center, which includes the Procedural Skills and Simulation Laboratories. He was accountable for strategic planning, fiscal management, staff development, and programmatic outcomes.
In addition to his leadership role at Mayo Clinic, Dr. Brownlee serves as adjunct faculty at the University of North Florida (UNF), where he contributes to the academic development of future healthcare leaders.
Beyond his professional responsibilities, Dr. Brownlee is a recognized leader in healthcare advocacy and community engagement. He is a Past Chapter President and former Board Member of the National Association of Health Services Executives (NAHSE), a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Culture of Health Leaders Alum, and a former United Way Northeast Florida Fellow. Additionally, he is an alumnus of Leadership Jacksonville (Class of 2023) and Leadership Florida (Connect Class 13).
Dr. Brownlee’s exceptional leadership has been recognized through multiple accolades, including the Jacksonville Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 Award and the Florida Black Expo Top 20 Under 40 Award.
