Hofstra Engineering High School Award
Hofstra University's Department of Engineering, which has been offering ABET-accredited degree programs since 1971, recognizes outstanding high school juniors with its Hofstra Engineering High School Award. Students are selected based on their demonstrated interest in engineering and technology. The selection committee includes Hofstra University Engineering faculty as well as working engineers and high school MST teachers.
Each award recipient receives a certificate from Hofstra and an invitation to attend a special awards banquet in June, along with their family and nominating teachers(s). In addition, an advertorial will run in the student's hometown newspaper announcing recognition for their achievement.
To be eligible, students must be juniors who are enrolled in chemistry or physics, math B, pre-calculus or above, and have demonstrated an interest in engineering and technology. Demonstrated interest may include presenting projects that feature engineering/technology at science-in-engineering competitions, participating in the FIRST Robotics Competition, or extracurricular clubs that feature engineering/technology, or taking a "Principles of Engineering" course.
A student may be nominated by one or more teachers in math, science or technology and/or a guidance counselor, along with approval by the school principal. Please keep in mind, this award recognizes work the student has already completed; no additional project or assignment is required.
We invite high school principals, teachers and guidance counselors to include your student scientists in this nomination process. Since this award is based on hard work already undertaken, no other steps are needed, except of course completing and returning the application. In today's competitive environment, this award and recognition can provide students with a well-deserved advantage when applying for college admission.
