History

The program was originated by Julia R. Vane (Ph.D., NYU), a prominent school psychologist and former president of the Division of School Psychology of the APA. It began in 1967 as a School Psychology Ph.D. program which graduated its first student in 1970. Under the leadership of Dr. Vane, the program first achieved American Psychological Association approval in 1973.

In 1977, the Psychology department faculty began a companion doctoral program in Clinical Psychology. The two programs were structured to have similar core components because the faculty believed that the same generic skills were necessary to work in either school or clinical settings. This philosophy led the faculty to merge the programs in 1980. The product of that merger was the Combined Clinical and School Psychology Ph.D. program. In June, 2005, the core faculty of the program unanimously decided to restructure the combined program into a strong scientist-practitioner Clinical Psychology program.

Accreditation

Since its initial accreditation in 1973, the Ph.D. program has been continuously accreditated by the American Psychological Association (APA).

The Ph.D. Program in Clinical  Psychology can be found In the annual listing of programs in the American Psychologist. The Clinical Psychology program is fully accredited and due for its next site visit in 2014.
