Career Potential

The Department of Journalism, Media Studies, and Public Relations fully prepares students for a wide range of possible career choices. While most of the graduates of this department have as their career goal a position in one of the three major fields covered by the programs, the opportunities for cross-fertilization are quite broad.

Print and broadcast journalists, for example, may specialize in a number of subsets of what has traditionally been viewed as news. Each of the major newspapers and networks in the area offer specialized pages or sections, from sports to business to social events and culture. In addition, many dedicate special sections to important discoveries like science and medicine, finance, entertainment, or legal affairs. Both network and cable news outlets offer magazine segments that highlight political races, social activities, or topical subjects such as weddings, pets, or automobiles.

Public relations graduates have a wide field from which to choose. Political candidates, major corporations, and local organizations have all discovered the need to bring their messages to the public. Our graduates are well trained in the areas of advanced copywriting, research methodologies, campaign strategies, and more.

Media studies graduates analyze the processes through which the media shape our understanding of our society, the nation, and its culture. Many of the media studies majors go on to graduate school, where they specialize in some form of media research and analysis. Others, having specialized in media, pursue graduate courses in law, accounting or politics, so they can advise those in the field as to how best to utilize the media in their projects.

Many of our graduates have found jobs in a variety of media, including The New York Times, Newsday, News12, PMK Public Relations, and theknot.com, to name just a few.
