CT221/SED 221: Middle Childhood Philosophy and Teaching (3 s.h.)
This course focuses broadly on several areas that demonstrate the character and challenges of middle schools and their students, such as: the history and rationale of the change from junior high to middle school, including the policy, philosophy, and foundations; the culture of middle-level schools; socio-cultural influences on middle-level schooling and students; developmental aspects of young adolescents and their needs for personalization and community; gender, diversity, and bullying issues; organizational issues, such as teaming and block scheduling; advisories; parent involvement; health and safety; and transforming schools.

CT 247A: Middle Childhood Curriculum: 5-6 (3 s.h.)
CT 248A: Middle Childhood Curriculum: 7-9 (3 s.h.)

Teaching at the middle level requires a globalized approach to academic curricula that goes beyond the knowledge of an individual subject.  This course emphasizes the interdisciplinary nature of the New York state standards and assessments.  We focus on the philosophy and practice of interdisciplinary and thematic integrated curriculum as well as the skills that need to be taught and infused into all subjects taught on these levels in order to provide continuity and articulation. Instructional strategies, differentiated curriculum, teaming of students and faculty, grade-level configurations, and diverse assessments are emphasized.  Students develop and demonstrate curricula focusing on the appropriate grade levels.
