Internships - Making Connections
To enhance the student experience, The Frank G. Zarb School of Business actively strives to broaden their graduate and undergraduate education with the real world perspective. Therefore, the Zarb School strongly supports executive speaker series, corporate visits, professional organization memberships and, especially, internships. Internships significantly augment coursework, allowing students to explore different career options; test their functional knowledge and business acumen; access varying corporate cultures and hone their communication skills – important attributes of a successful and confident professional that simply cannot be fully taught in the classroom. Internships also allow students to begin that crucial networking process and often interns are offered full-time employment by sponsoring companies.
Internships are strongly supported and encouraged by all departments within the Zarb School. Whatever your major area of concentration, there is an internship coordinator in each department ready to assist in internship planning. Internships can be taken on a credit or non-credit basis during the fall, spring and summer. The Hofstra Career Center and Graduate Business Career Services are also important resources, with an extensive database of internship listings and professionals to help with all aspects of the internship process. On the graduate level, a three-part internship search workshop is available, offering students internship resources, individualized action plans and practical training. We urge you to consider an internship early in your studies at the Zarb School.
In this ever-changing business environment, students need to supplement their coursework with internships. The rigorous Zarb curriculum gives students the knowledge and skills that businesses require; an internship adds that all-important, competitive edge. Good luck in your internship pursuit. Please let us know if there is any way we can be of assistance.

IT/QM
With the support of the IT Executive Board of Visitors our department has embarked on an internship program for our information technology students. The vision of this program is to give our students the opportunity to gain valuable real-world IT experience by completing an internship in some of the best organizations in our area. The IT/QM Department's philosophy is that the worth of business education is demonstrated by the graduate's ability to successfully apply his/her skills to the solution of business problems. This internship program allows you to enhance your "hands-on" experience in design and management of contemporary systems as well as in specific IT areas including data management, systems analysis and design, networks and connectivity, multimedia design, e-commerce, project management, and enterprise systems. | more |
Our internship program is currently under the supervision of an outstanding internship advisor, Dr. John Affisco. He will pass your resume on to employers who have listed internship positions with the IT/QM Department. The employer will contact the applicant(s) they wish to interview. The employing company will notify the internship advisor of the location of the internship and the intern's supervisor including contact information. You can obtain detailed information by clicking the "IT Internship" tab on the Hofstra Information Technology Association (HITA) Blackboard site which is available to you.
Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Dr. Mohammed Tafti, Professor and Chairperson

Finance
Internships in Finance provide our majors with hands-on experience in diverse and dynamic corporations and financial institutions. Hofstra's Long Island location provides ready access to New York City, one of the world's financial centers, and our students have been fortunate enough to have had internships with companies such as Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, and Citi, among others. Qualified students can earn three finance elective credits (Finance 185) while working on their internship. Students work a minimum of 100 hours during a semester, while writing an internship related research paper under the supervision of a finance faculty member. A faculty member supervises the intern throughout the semester, meeting with him/her regularly. Students interested in earning elective credit for a finance internship meets with the department's internship coordinator who approves internship opportunities. Generally, internship opportunities are obtained through the career center. | more |
A second venue for obtaining internship and career opportunities is through the Financial Management Association (FMA) Club, a student run club that meets on Wednesdays during common hour. The club regularly hosts speakers from Wall Street and other firms, many of the alumni who are actively involved in linking current students to opportunities. The FMA sponsors a dinner each spring to bring current club members in contact with alumni.

Accounting, Taxation & Legal Studies in Business
The Accounting, Taxation, and Legal Studies department offers students an array of opportunities. Majors in accounting can pursue a plethora of career paths and often need advisement about their choices. The faculty in our department takes an active role in educating students about the various possibilities available after graduating and helps students prepare to be successful. | more |
Accounting majors can enter public accounting where they can gain experience in auditing, or taxation. Others can find employment in the accounting departments of other for profit entities where they can specialize in managerial, cost accounting, taxation, financial or internal audit. Opportunities also exist in the not for profit sector and in the government.
While attending Hofstra, students are encouraged to network with professionals. We have numerous clubs including Beta Alpha Psi, the Accounting Society, the Institute of Management Accountants, the National Association of Black Accountants, the Tax Society and the Legal Studies Club. Each club brings in weekly guest speakers from industry who present topics that help prepare members for their career. The clubs also offer our students the opportunity to volunteer and to socialize.
Our students are recruited by the large, medium and small CPA firms. Many students are offered mentorships, and internships while attending the university and gain full time positions with those firms upon graduation. Other students pursue graduate work and begin their careers after obtaining an M.S. or M.B.A degree.

Management, Entrepreneurship and General Business
Welcome to the Department of Management, Entrepreneurship and General Business. I am Dr. Mamdouh Farid, the chairperson of the department and I would like to welcome you and to draw your attention to some features of our MGT internship program. | more |
This program enables students to learn management principles and applications through actual work experience in the field meanwhile enabling students to earn credits. In many cases, internships have been an opportunity for the student to recognize the right career that fits his/her profile and interest.
A company who offers an internship seeks a skilled, hardworking and motivated individual to help contribute to the company’s growing needs especially if the company faces a dynamic growing business. An internship is a unique opportunity for the student to see how his/her class learning can affect the profit of a company.
A company who offers internships seeks individual with:
- Strong technical and management skills
- High initiative
- Computer skills
- Team player skills
- Problem solving skills
Students works for a minimum number of hours in a structured management training programs offered by a for-profit or not-for-profit organization. The student should get the employer and the department’s approval and then register in a formal class to earn credits. Through the course of the internship, the student will be guided by a faculty advisor and will be required to write reports about the company, areas of management studied in the internship, and type of tasks undertaken. The grade of the internship relies on the quality of the work as reported by the employer and of the reports that are submitted to the faculty advisor.
A partial List of Employer Organizations who have provided Internship to our MGT students include: VELOX Micro; Make a Wish Foundation Internships; New York Life Insurance; The Institute on Philanthropy and Voluntary Service; Morgan Stanley-Smith Barney; The Merrill Lynch; The Long Island Real Estate Group (LIREG).
Also Job/Internship postings are offered on the Department and Hofstra Career Center Web sites.
Internships contribute to your competitive edge in job seeking. Student clubs like SAM (Society for the Advancement in Management) offer conference attendance and national competition programs which should also contribute to your experience and competitive resume.
We have two types of internships: (1) one is Internship in mgt or MGT 185, which requires senior status, and at least GPA of 3.0, and (2) the other one is Business Internship or MGT 174, which is opened to juniors or senior with a GPA of at least 2.5. Now, in MGT 185, students work for 3 credits while in MGT 174, students work for 1 credit, 2 credits or 3 credits. Therefore, students can take MGT 174 up to three times for one credit each.
Please come to see me or the faculty member is in charge of internship coordination if you have any questions.
