CENTER FOR CIVIC ENGAGEMENT
Hofstra University partners with organizations across Long Island and New York City to provide students with meaningful opportunities to apply classroom learning to real-world challenges. Through the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE), students collaborate with local organizations on projects that address shared community priorities while gaining hands-on experience and developing professional and civic leadership skills.
These partnerships create mutual value. Community organizations benefit from students’ knowledge, skills, and perspectives, while students gain a deeper understanding of the issues facing local communities and the collaborative efforts needed to create positive change.
In recent years, the CCE has partnered with organizations including the Uniondale Community Land Trust, Greater Uniondale Area Action Coalition, New York Civil Liberties Union, SEPA Mujer, Rural & Migrant Ministry, Women’s Diversity Network, and Effective Transit Alliance.
Students interested in working with these organizations—or developing new community partnerships—may apply for a CCE Fellowship. These competitive fellowships are awarded and renewed each semester, giving students the opportunity to expand their experience in community engagement while making a meaningful impact.
CCE Fellowships
Each semester, the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) selects up to 16 students to serve as CCE Fellows. Fellows work closely with community partners while supporting the Center’s programs, initiatives, and daily operations.
As CCE Fellows, students contribute to projects such as producing the Center’s newsletter, engaging with student organizations, and promoting events and programs. They also share their experiences through a variety of communication channels, including the CCE blog, podcast, and opinion pieces for local news outlets.
Because Fellows work directly with community organizations and play an active role in advancing the CCE’s mission, they receive a modest stipend each semester to help offset related expenses.
