DEPARTMENT OF

PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY

About the Department

Physics lies at the heart of our understanding of the natural world, providing the fundamental principles that underpin today’s most important scientific and technological advances. At Hofstra University, the Department of Physics and Astronomy offers an engaging and supportive environment where students sharpen their critical thinking skills through evidence-based, logical reasoning exercises both in and outside of the classroom. In addition to small, interactive classes, hands-on laboratories, and outdoor experiences, students also have the opportunity to form close collaboration with faculty conducting cutting edge research from superconductors to exploding stars.

The physics and astronomy faculty are active researchers and dedicated teachers whose expertise spans classical and modern physics, from mechanics and optics to quantum theory and thermodynamics. They engage students through hands-on labs, independent projects, and collaborative research, often inviting undergraduates to participate in faculty-led research as early as their sophomore year.

The Student Experience

In our department, you’ll have access to the resources and opportunities you need to enhance and extend your education.

Two people stand by a whiteboard with handwritten notes. One person with pink hair is holding a marker and talking, while the other listens and smiles. Both appear engaged in discussion.

Hofstra Physics majors are trained in analytic problem-solving with the collection and processing of data, along with the interpretation of data through highly developed mathematical models. These skills are applicable in a wide variety of professions – from engineering to finance to medicine. Our students have great success in gaining admittance to high-quality graduate programs and medical and law schools.
