Why Study Neuroscience
Neuroscience at Hofstra blends psychology, biology, chemistry, physics, and math to explore how the brain and nervous system function. Through interdisciplinary coursework, often taught by a team of faculty across departments, you’ll build a strong scientific foundation for careers in medicine, research, biotechnology, and robotics and for academic study or advanced training in PhD or professional programs.
You’ll develop quantitative, computational, and laboratory skills through interactive, hands-on courses and themed lab experiences. Students are also encouraged to pursue internships at leading organizations such as the Alzheimer’s Association, Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, and American Cancer Society, gaining meaningful exposure to real-world neuroscience and related fields.

The BS in Neuroscience offers two tracks with a focus in psychology or biology, with courses that are selected from both departments. On the macro level, neuroscience examines human cognition and behavior in relation to the brain. On the micro level, for example, it delves into how hormones and neurons affect the body.
Some classes and topics include behavioral neuroscience, genetics, sensation and perception, hormones and behavior, and clinical neuropsychology.

Sensation and Perception
“We think of the senses as these perfect mechanisms that will always give us the right answer, that our eyes will always make us see the right thing, and that’s not true,” said Elisabeth Ploran, an associate professor of cognitive neuroscience and psychology. “Our brain plays tricks on us. In psychology, we’re usually focusing on perception, and we think of that as the same as sensation. It’s important for students to understand the difference.”
