Why Study Physical Education
Hofstra’s physical education program lets you turn your passion for sports, fitness, and working with young people into a meaningful teaching and coaching career. You’ll be prepared to teach at the elementary, middle, or high school level and able to tailor your path through programs such as the BSEd in Physical Education, the physical education and health dual degree, or the physical education and sport sciences minor.
With exceptional on-campus facilities, including an Olympic-size pool, adventure courses, fitness centers, and NCAA Division I athletics, you’ll have extensive opportunities for hands-on learning. Students can join or work with varsity teams, gain insight into sports performance, and build real coaching experience, all while developing the skills to educate and inspire the next generation.

The physical education program provides a broad, scientifically based study of a dynamic field that has evolved from traditional games and sports to health and wellness activities that develop both mind and body for students of diverse backgrounds and abilities. Our faculty are highly diverse and well recognized, locally and nationally, in their areas of expertise, which include motor learning, sports psychology, and pedagogy.
Through coursework and field experience, physical education majors gain opportunities to teach children how to live healthy lifestyles through competitive, noncompetitive, and recreational activities.

Requirements

Internships
Students must complete an independent internship experience coaching a middle school or high school interscholastic team for at least one season (or other similar experience as approved by the program director). Hofstra’s highly credentialed faculty guide your development, and its full-service Center for Career Design and Development provides additional chances to reach your postgraduation goals.

Fieldwork/Student Teaching
The Office of Field Placement offers support as students navigate their requirements for field observations, clinical experiences, and student teaching. Students enrolled in programs that lead to New York State teaching certification are required to complete a minimum of 100 hours of fieldwork prior to the student teaching experience.
