The C-SPAN Campaign 2008 Bus

The C-SPAN Campaign 2008 Bus will be open to public for brief tours and educational programs. Students are invited to board the bus for 15-minute tours and discussions about the 2008 election. For more information, go to www.campaign2008bus.org.

The 45-foot bus is equipped with mobile multi-media demonstration centers and TV production units that can be used as studios during live programs, such as C-SPAN's Washington Journal. This allows C-SPAN the opportunity to interview students, authors, journalists and politicians aboard the Buses from anywhere in the country.

The Brian Lehrer Show: Forum on Youth Issues Live broadcast

10 a.m. - noon, Studio A, Dempster Hall, South Campus

  • First hour: A preview of the evening’s presidential debate and the current news from the campaign trail, with leading journalists, academics, and representatives from both campaigns.
  • Second hour: As part of the “Thirty Issues in Thirty Days” series, the Hofstra Presidential Debate - October 15, 2008 7 discussion will center on college affordability, student loans, and other issues important to today’s college students. Democracia USA

This event is open to the campus.

Democracia USA is a national nonpartisan voter registration and civic engagement program that operates in 5 states throughout the U.S. In 2006, Democracia USA was recognized by the Associated Press with registering 60 percent of the newly registered Hispanic voters in the country. Currently, the organization is actively involved in registering Hispanics for the November Election.

The event will present an unprecedented study entitled "The Most Influential Hispanic Americans," which surveyed 500 Hispanics throughout the country to determine who Hispanics were turning to for political news and information. From the results, Democracia was able to pinpoint 15 Influential Hispanic Leaders. The Influential leaders include: Henry Cisneros, former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and Bill Richardson, Governor of New Mexico to name a few.

These influential leaders will be attending the final Presidential Debate at Hofstra and will be presented with the results and a token of appreciation at an on-campus press conference on Oct.15th, 2008. Democracia will be co-sponsoring this event with the student club, Hofstra Organization of Latin Americans (H.O.L.A.). H.O.L.A seeks to educate the Hofstra community about Latino culture, and educational, political, and social issues impacted the community.

“Bailed Out or Bogged Down: Economic Challenges Facing the Next President”

A press briefing and webcast hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) and the Peter S. Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency at Hofstra University.

Panelists include:

  • Edward Alden, Bernard L. Schwartz Senior Fellow, CFR; former Washington bureau chief at Financial Times. Author of, The Closing of the American Border. Expertise: U.S. economic competitiveness, U.S. trade policy, visa and immigration policy.
  • Brad W. Setser, Fellow for Geoeconomics, CFR; applied international economist with experience at the U.S. Treasury and the International Monetary Fund. Expertise: is central bank reserves and sovereign wealth funds, IMF policy, emerging market economies.
  • Moderated by Meena Bose, Ph.D., Peter S. Kalikow Chair in Presidential Studies.

Hofstra University students are invited to celebrate the excitement of the presidential debate.

  • Student Center Theater (Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center, North Campus) for a pre-debate panel about how the candidates are preparing for the debate and what to watch for.
  • Student Center Main Dining Room (Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center, North Campus) to hear students talk about the issues and the debate.
  • Netherlands cafeteria (North Campus) for a variety of trivia games, art projects, and other hands-on activities.
  • Hofstra USA (North Campus) to enjoy student bands and other entertainment at this pre-debate party.

Large screen viewing of debate at 9 p.m. at each party. Refreshments will be provided.

Third Presidential Debate

Hofstra University is pleased to be the site of the third presidential debate of the 2008 campaign, produced by the Commission on Presidential Debates, a nonpartisan organization.

The presenting sponsors are The Peter S. Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency, The John D. Miller Fund at the Long Island Community Foundation, and Sondra and David S. Mack.

“I’m Voting For” Post-Debate Discussion

Join Hofstra students for a facilitated conversation about whether the candidates addressed the issues that are most important, and watch video clips of Hofstra students talking about the issues that are driving them to the polls. Dessert will be served.
