Chinese Quince

The Chinese Quince is one of Hofstra’s most notable trees.  It was originally saved from the chainsaw by the Hofstra University Arboretum along with residents from the town of its original location, Thomaston, NY by its move here to campus in the autumn of 1990. Presently it stands at 40 feet in height which is as tall as the tree is expected to grow.  Delicious jam has been made at Hofstra from its 6” oblong shaped yellow fruit.  The Chinese Quince is a member of the “Rose Family” and flowers pink in late May.  Its deep green foliage turns a brilliant scarlet in fall.  The exfoliating black bark peels off in irregular sheets exposing multi-colors of greens, browns and orange.
