More About Graduate Programs in Literacy Studies

The Learning Experience

Students engage in a rich experience of coursework in language, culture, reading, writing, literature, and assessment. Field placements in school, family, and community settings, give students hands-on experiences working with children and adolescents. Students complete their studies with a 30 hour practicum at the Reading/Writing/Learning Clinic at the Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Center on the Hofstra Campus, where they assess, plan, and carry out instruction to meet the needs of their students, under the supervision of literacy program faculty. Students learn multiple approaches to reading and writing assessment with a strong focus on sociocultural perspectives in literacy. These practices and approaches are supported by the New York State Common Core Learning Standards in Language Arts and Literacy. Classes are small and participatory.

Our Graduates

Graduates of the MSEd, MA, and Advanced Certificate programs in Literacy Studies are highly sought out for positions on Long Island and the New York metropolitan area as classroom teachers, school level literacy specialists, content area teachers, special education teachers, district level lead teachers for the language arts, school and public librarians, nursery school teachers and directors, administrators of schools and organizations, and community college faculty. They have found jobs as close as Uniondale and as far away as Alaska.

The Literacy Studies Program also provides literacy-across-the-curriculum courses for programs throughout the School of Education.
