Code of Conduct

The Writing Center aims to provide a safe space for the exchange of intellectual ideas. Consistent with the mission of Hofstra University, writing center staff and clients will treat each other with respect and dignity. We aim to model professional exchange and engagement. The Writing Center does not tolerate discrimination or harassment of any members of the Hofstra community.

Appointment Policies for Current Hofstra Students, Faculty, and Staff

  • Writers may make a maximum of one appointment per day and three appointments per week. All appointments are 50-minutes long.
  • Writers should arrive on time to their sessions. If a writer is 5 minutes late, we consider the appointment missed; however, we will call to see if the writer is on their way. If the writer is not on their way, we will mark the appointment as “no-show” and open the appointment to another writer.
  • If necessary, writers should cancel appointments online at least two hours before their sessions. If a writer misses two appointments, without canceling in advance within one semester, they will not be able to make Writing Center appointments for the remainder of the semester.

Appointment Policies for Alumni

While our main focus is on current Hofstra students, faculty, and staff developing academic writing across the curriculum, we also support alumni in a more limited capacity.

Here are examples of the kinds of non-academic work we CAN help with

  • Application materials for graduate school, fellowships, and internships.
  • Government forms and paperwork.
  • Cover letters and personal statements.

Here are examples of the kinds of work Hofstra University’s Writing Center tutors CANNOT help with:

  • Writing resumes; we encourage resume-writers to visit The Career Center.
  • Dissertation editing.
  • General editorial work; if a writer is told to procure an editor, we cannot offer this service.
  • Writing sponsored or commissioned by an organization beyond Hofstra, whether paid or volunteered.
  • Writing intended for commercial publication.
  • Writing that will ultimately be distributed for profit.
  • Test preparation; i.e., we cannot support preparation for the GRE, GMAT, MCAT, LSAT, etc.

We have these policies in place because our tutoring sessions are limited, and we want to help our many Hofstra writers as effectively as possible.

If writers need to discuss these policies or their scheduling accounts with the Writing Center, they should contact Writing Center Director Andrea Efthymiou (andrea.r.efthymiou[at]hofstra.edu) or Assistant Director Marilyn Buono (marilyn.f.buono[at]hofstra.edu).
