CAREER CENTER
At the Career Center, we recognize that some of the most important career conversations students have are most likely with their family. You play an integral role in your student’s career development, and we want to partner with you so that we can help empower your student to create a meaningful career.
The Career Center provides a holistic approach to career readiness that can include career coaching, major exploration, administering assessments, resume and interview preparation, and more. We encourage students to form a relationship with us when they arrive at Hofstra and will communicate that with them after they get here. Our team is excited to help your student succeed.
How can you support your student’s success?
- Encourage students to visit the Career Center throughout their Hofstra experience.
- Support students in taking personal responsibility for their career ambitions.
- Help your student identify professionals to connect with to learn more about their industry of choice while expanding their network.
Family Frequently Asked Questions
It is never too early to visit the Career Center! The Career Center isn’t just a place to talk about getting a job after graduation. Some employers are looking to hire students for internships even as early as first semester sophomore year!
We’ll assist students in achieving their goals no matter what stage they may be in, but we encourage students to visit us early on in their academic career.
As is standard practice in today’s colleges and universities, The Career Center does not place students directly into positions. We can support your student in finding roles and companies that align with their goals and give them strategies to help them be successful in applying for roles.
Each Hofstra student has access to a variety of resources, including Handshake, a job-search database, which contains thousands of opportunities for which employers are specifically seeking to hire from Hofstra for early career opportunities. We encourage our students to gain experience in any form, including opportunities beyond jobs and internships such as volunteering, shadowing, studying abroad, or doing virtual simulations through Forage.
Most majors give students transferable skills to succeed in many different career paths. As such, a student’s major does not necessarily dictate the path they will pursue. If your student chooses to follow an academic path more in line with their personal rather than professional interests, there are always ways to apply the knowledge and skills they obtain to the workforce. If your student is considering a major change, we will discuss how the new major will benefit their overall career goals. We also recommend that students considering a major change consult their appropriate dean at the Center for University Advising to see how their plan of study may be affected.
We offer a variety of assessments to help students learn more about themselves, reflect on their experiences, and see how those experiences can create a successful career path. For more information on our career assessments, students can schedule an appointment with any member of our team.
The content of our coaching appointments is driven by the student and their needs. Appointments typically take 45 minutes. We offer a variety of appointment types including Resume Strategy, Cover Letter Strategy, Major/Career Exploration, Internship/Job search, Graduate School Preparation, Interview Preparation, and more! Students can also drop in for quick questions during our drop-in hours throughout the fall and spring semesters 1:00-3:00 p.m on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
We encourage students to attend their Career Center appointments on their own, so that they can get a true feel for professional conversations. If you would like to attend your student’s coaching appointment with them, we will ask your student for their permission before the meeting begins. To uphold university privacy policies, we cannot discuss any student career information over the phone with parents unless they are listed on their student’s FERPA permissions.
The Career Center is a part of the SEES division, (Student Enrollment, Engagement, and Success) a team of units designed to support your student from when they enroll at Hofstra to graduation and beyond. Additionally, the Career Center’s coaching team collaborates with faculty in each School to better meet the needs of their target student populations.
Yes! Alumni have access to our coaching services and many digital resources as well. If your students wishes to schedule an appointment and they already graduated, please have them email careerdesign@hofstra.edu OR call 516-463-6060.
This information is available through Hofstra’s Graduate Outcomes reports. As for the consideration of Graduate School, each program of study carries different requirements and qualifications for employment. While some fields require a graduate degree for entry- or mid-level positions, other fields may see the holding of a graduate degree without pertinent work experience as an over-qualification. Our team can help your student navigate their field of interest to determine when and how further education should be best pursued.
Hofstra graduates are confident, prepared, and fully ready to make a difference in the future.
