Bio

Dr. James P. McCrann has been on the faculty of Hofstra University since 2014, where he is currently Associate Director of Bands. Along with conducting the University Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band, he teaches Advanced Special Studies in Wind Conducting and Music Education at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Since 1994, he has been Director of Bands at Garden City High School in Long Island, New York, where he also held positions as District Coordinator of Music and the Arts and conductor of the high school orchestra program. During this time, Garden City High School’s music program expanded its enrollment and program offerings by more than four-fold while earning its first of multiple national recognitions from the Grammy Foundation, and NAMM as one of the Best Communities for Music Education in the U.S.

Dr. McCrann received a D.M.A. in Music Education and Wind Conducting from the Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts. He has a B.S. in Music Education and an M.A. in Wind Conducting from Hofstra University, where he served as Graduate Conducting Associate. His primary conducting teachers are Dr. Peter Loel Boonshaft and Dr. William Berz. Dr. McCrann also has a P.D. in Educational Administration. He is a member of the National Association for Music Education, the New York State School Music Association, the College Band Directors National Association, the College Music Society, the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, the National Band Association, the New York State Band Directors Association, the Suffolk County Music Educators Association, and the Nassau Music Educators Association where he has held Chair and Executive Board positions. He has been awarded honorary recognitions and memberships from Grammy in the Schools, Pi Kappa Lambda, theTri-M National Music Honor Society, and from School Band and Orchestra magazine as one of “50 Directors Who Make a Difference.”

Along with his work as the Band and Wind Ensemble Review Editor of the New York State School Music Association’s School Music News, Dr. McCrann’s articles on music education and the wind band have appeared in state, national, and international publications, including the Journal of the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles and The Instrumentalist. He has presented at regional conferences and workshops. He has also collaborated with some of the nation's foremost conductors and composers, culminating in the commissioning of new works for band, chorus, and orchestra by notable composers, including the Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Moravec, Brian Balmages, Kenneth Lampl, and Reber Clark. A freelance percussionist, Dr. McCrann has performed with numerous ensembles, including the Atlantic Wind Symphony, the American Concert Band, and the Old Bethpage Village Restoration Brass Band. He maintains an active schedule as an adjudicator, clinician, and guest conductor, having worked with school bands and orchestras from across the country.
