Dr. William E. Hettrick has recently produced two major critical editions of choral music by the 19th-century Viennese composer Johann Herbeck (1831–77), published by A-R Editions (Middleton, Wisconsin): Five German Works for Unaccompanied Men's Chorus, A-R Special Publications, vol. 38, and Selected German Works, Part 3: For Unaccompanied Mixed Chorus, Recent Researches in the Music of the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries, vol. 64. They continue his series of editions devoted to Herbeck's works, previously published by A-R Editions in 2008 (Selected German Works for Unaccompanied Men's Chorus) and 2012 (Selected German Works, Part 2: For Men's Chorus and Mixed Chorus with Accompanying Instruments). Over the last four years, he has also made presentations on the history of the American piano industry at annual meetings of the American Musical Instrument Society: "An Ample Supply: American Piano-Parts Manufacturers and Dealers up to 1900" in 2011, a walking tour of the "Piano District" through the streets of historical Mott Haven (Bronx) in 2012 (meeting held in New York), "'Movin' on Up': The Great Migration of Piano Manufacturers and Dealers to Harlem and the Bronx, New York, in the Period 1880–1930" in 2013, and "The Paradoxical Mr. Swick: A Colorful Episode in the History of American Piano Manufacturing and Trade Journalism" in 2014.

In January, 2015, Dr. William E. Hettrick, Professor of Music, pursued research in the archive of the Hofmusikkapelle in Vienna leading to his critical edition of the best-loved work by the Viennese composer Johann Herbeck (1831–1877): “Pueri concinite,” a Christmas piece composed in 1868 for solo tenor, mixed chorus, and small orchestra. It will be published this fall by A-R Editions (Madison, WI) in their series “Special Publications.” In June, 2015, he presented a paper (by invitation) titled “’Eine schöne art von dreierley geigen’: Streichinstrumente in Martin Agricolas Musica instrumentalis deudsch (1529 und 1545)” at the conference Groß Geigen, Vyolen, Rybeben: Grossformatige Streichinstrumente in nordalpininen Quellen um 1500, organized by the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis–Hochschule für Alte Musik and the Museum für Musik in Basel, Switzerland. He also returned to Vienna, where he continued his archival research on Herbeck’s greatest Mass setting, his Mass in E Minor, composed in 1866. Dr. Hettrick’s critical edition of this work is under contract with A-R Editions, to be published in their series “Recent Researches in the Music of the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries.”Over the last several years, he has made presentations on the history of the American piano industry at annual meetings of the American Musical Instrument Society. He is presently completing an article: “The American Piano-Supply Industry in the Nineteenth Century, with Particular Attention to the Career and Manufacturing Methods of Joseph P. Hale.”

Teaching Interests

Over a period of more than forty-five years at Hofstra, Dr. Hettrick has taught music history, opera, symphony, Wagner, history of musical instruments, American music, introduction to graduate studies (musicology), words and music (graduate musicology), rudiments, harmony, eartraining, counterpoint, orchestration, form analysis, choral and instrumental methods, choral conducting, brass class, and recorder class; as well as graduate theses and undergraduate honors essays on various aspects of musicology. He has given instruction in recorder and viola da gamba and has founded and directed the Collegium Musicum (1969–2013) and the Recorder Ensemble (2011–).
