Residence Life

Special Housing Accommodations

The Office of Residence Life offers a variety of living environments that accommodate many different lifestyle needs. Learning to share space and connecting with others is an essential part of living in a residential community. The University is committed to providing reasonable housing accommodations to students who require them due to a disability, including the accommodation of a single room where medically necessary.

Students approved for a medical single room are required to submit an updated student request each year, unless waived by Student Access Services, as detailed further under Housing Accommodations.

Service Animals/Assistance Animals

Hofstra University provides reasonable and appropriate accommodations for an assistance animal in on-campus housing for a student with a documented disability. Before bringing an assistance animal to campus, the requesting individual must submit a request and appropriate supporting documentation. A student who is living in on-campus housing (residence halls) must make a formal request to Student Access Services for an accommodation. The review process may take 30 days or more. New incoming students should submit their request by June 1 for the fall semester and November 1 for the spring semester. There is no guarantee that Hofstra University will be able to accommodate late requests, including any needs that develop during the semester.

Prior to submitting your Emotional Support Animal (ESA) request with Student Access Services, please verify that your animal crate is suitable to fit under your bed. See below for the maximum height requirements for our residence halls on campus:

*Please note this is the height measurement from the floor to the bed spring when the bed spring is raised to the highest setting*

For the High-Rise Towers, The Netherlands Complex, Colonial Square Complex, and Stuyvesant: 31 inches or 78.74 centimeters

For Nassau and Suffolk Halls: 27 ¾ inches or 70.48 centimeters
