Baile y Música: Preserving Hispanic Culture on Long Island

In January 2004, the staff of Hofstra University's Special Collections Department began working on a Documentary Heritage Program (DHP) grant from the New York State Archives. The grant was for a survey project, the goal of which was to locate and identify records (i.e., correspondence, photographs, artifacts, etc.) concerning the history and culture of Long Island's burgeoning Hispanic population. While people from different walks of life participated in the project, this exhibition showcases materials contributed by, or which are on loan from, various Hispanic dance and music groups. Included are musical instruments, traditional costumes, sheet music, and photographs. Among the Spanish-speaking countries represented in the exhibition are Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Paraguay, and Peru. Also represented is the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
