Hofstra University Person of Color Sculpture Competition Finalists

On January 1, 2007 Hofstra University initiated its first sculpture competition. The proposed sculpture will reflect an affirmative statement of the ideals, accomplishments, and historic achievements of people of color; its theme should reflect the importance of a person of color, individuals, groups or movements that honor the vital history and contributions that have strengthened our nation and our world.

The Hofstra University Museum's outdoor sculpture garden features over 70 sculptures sited in landscaped areas throughout the 240-acre campus. Artists such as Seymour Lipton, Paul Manship, Henry Moore, Tony Rosenthal and John Safer are included in this important collection. There exist several examples of works that highlight historic and cultural American leaders such as Aaron Copland, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson. There are also works that are conceptual in nature, such as John Safer's Phoenix honoring those lost in 9/11/01.

The Person of Color Sculpture Committee, consisting of University faculty, students and administrators, received 26 proposals. After due deliberation, the Committee selected five (5) finalist candidates.

Maquettes, drawings and sketches by the five finalist will be on view in the David Filderman Gallery, 9th floor, Axinn Library. The finalists are:
