The works of internationally celebrated American painter and graphic artist, R.B. Kitaj, will be on display from August 22 – October 23, 2005 in the 10th floor Lowenfeld Exhibition Hall and the 9th floor Filderman Gallery in the Axinn Library.
In an essay published in 1964, Kitaj wrote, "some books have pictures and some pictures have books." A lifelong bibliophile, Kitaj has found much of his inspiration for his artworks in books. In Our Time: Covers for a Small Library After the Life for the Most Part is a portfolio of 50 screenprints, published in 1969. The book jackets themselves form the basis of the images of the prints. They are objects presented to us visually as well as works which appealed to Kitaj because of their references to literature and film, and social and political history.
