The Photographs of Ruth Orkin

April 25 - August 12, 2005
Lowenfeld Exhibition Hall, Axinn Library, 10th floor

The Photographs of Ruth Orkin features twenty of Orkin's works including her most famous, American Girl in Italy. Ruth Orkin (1921-1985) took photographs of musicians, celebrities, street scenes (abroad and in New York City) and, in later years, views from a window of her apartment on Central Park West (New York City). Included in this exhibition are examples of each of these genres: a young Woody Allen posing in front of a portrait at The Metropolitan Museum of Art; composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein relaxing backstage; stunning views of Manhattan's Central Park; and the famous American Girl in Italy, a city street shot which became a best-selling, monochrome fine art print and poster. The Hofstra Museum's exhibition of this sampler of Ruth Orkin's work is the first of its kind in decades.
