Don Quixote: The First 400 Years

Four hundred years ago, Miguel de Cervantes was laying his quill to rest. Don Quixote de la Mancha was ready for the press. And so began the odyssey of his "Ingenious Gentleman" across the nations and across the ages, an odyssey that remains without end. The Hofstra Cultural Center was proud to celebrate the event with a three-day conference of academic papers, musical and dramatic performances, exhibits and discussions.

Some of the topics that were covered at the conference included "The Cognitive Cervantes," "Portraits of a Society," "Don Quixote in Far-Off Places," "Don Quixote in Opera and Ballet," "Don Quixote Goes to College," "Cervantes in Mark Twain," and "Don Quixote, Movie Star." The keynote speaker and Joseph G. Astman Distinguished Conference Scholar, Edith Grossman, Translator of Don Quixote, gave an address on Thursday, November 6, 2004 at 10:45 a.m. as part of the opening ceremonies.

Other special events included a pre-conference performance by pianist Adam Kent on Wednesday, November 3, 2004; a Cervantine banquet on Friday, November 5, 2004; and a concert by the New York Virtuosi Chamber Symphony immediately following the banquet.
