A series of Irish films followed by discussions

Spring Semester 2010

Thursday, February 18th, 5:30-8pm in the Cultural Center Theater
The Commitments— Screen adaptation of the popular Roddy Doyle novel. Voted “the best Irish film of all time” in a 2005 online poll conducted by the Dubliner Magazine. A quest to create a great rhythm and blues band reveals much about the Irish soul. Discussion to be facilitated by Professor Maggie Burke.

Wednesday, March 3rd, 5:30-8pm in the Student Center Theater
Kings— Written and directed written & directed by Tom Collins, starring Colm Meaney. Irish language film with English subtitles. Ireland's official entry for the 2008 Academy Awards in the best foreign-language film category. Set in Connemara and North London, the film examines the hunger, restlessness, and regret associated with Irish emigration. Discussion facilitated by Professor Maureen Murphy.

Wednesday, April 14th, 5:30-8pm in the Monroe Lecture Center Theater
The Girl with Green Eyes— Screen adaptation of Edna O’Brien’s novel The Lonely Girl, starring Rita Tushingham. Set in 1960s Dublin, the film examines the intersection of desires for worldly experience and a return to innocence. Discussion facilitated by Professor Maureen Murphy.

Fall Semester 2009

Wednesday, September 16th, 5:30-8pm in the Cultural Center Theater
Once— Written and directed by John Carney, starring Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová. Winner of the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival and an Academy Award for Best Original Song. Set in Dublin, the film explores relationships between love, loss, and migration. Discussion to be facilitated by Professor Maureen McFeeley.

Wednesday, October 7th, 5:30-8pm in the Cultural Center Theater
Wilde— Directed by Brian Gilbert, starring Stephen Fry and Jude Law. The film crafts a sympathetic and complex portrait of the witty and irreverent writer, Oscar Wilde. Discussion to be facilitated by Professor Maureen Murphy.

Tuesday, November 10th, 5:30-8pm in the Monroe Lecture Center Theater
The Departed— Directed by Martin Scorsese, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin, Vera Farmiga, and Mark Wahlberg. Winner of four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Set in South Boston and Charlestown, the film masterfully plays with tensions between the myths of the Irish cop and the Irish outlaw. Discussion to be facilitated by Professor Rich Pioreck.
