How to Obtain a Physics and Astronomy Internship

There are several ways to seek an internship in Physics or Astronomy. The Physics Department traditionally advertises its own paid summer internships. There are also grant-funded internships that are available through the faculty member who is the principal investigator for the grant. Students may receive academic credit for these summer internships – in consultation with the department chair - by enrolling in an independent study or honors course in the academic year following the internship. This gives students time to write a substantial paper based on their internship experience and research.

In addition, the department expects to offer a new internship course that will be worth 1-6 semester hours’ credit:

Internship in Physics

This internship program aims at providing students with an opportunity to gain an understanding of the applications of physics in industry, government, research at Hofstra or in other academic settings, health care, and analogous settings involving physics. The intern will develop a project jointly with his/her outside supervisor and his/her Hofstra supervising professor, perform a minimum of 28 hours of work in an approved institution, meet regularly with his/her Hofstra supervising professor, do related reading and writing assignments, and submit a final capstone term paper including a final oral presentation. Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes: Successful completion of at least 18 semester hours in Physics with a grade point average in Physics of 3.0 or above, a GPA in 100-level Physics of 3.3 or above, and approval of a project proposal at least one month before the end of the semester preceding the semester of the internship. May be repeated for credit.
