The Hofstra University Educational and Policy Leadership (EPL) program is committed to preparing reflective higher education leaders and has produced graduates currently holding leadership positions in a variety of colleges and universities.

The program utilizes a “theory to practice” philosophy. The EPL program provides the intellectual foundation, the opportunity for reflection through both cognitive and aesthetic experience, and the experiential approach that is necessary to prepare creative, flexible, visionary leaders. The program develops leadership skills necessary to conceptualize and analyze, appreciate and construct, interpret and integrate knowledge to lead change in the college or university setting.

EPL doctoral students develop habits of critical questioning and the reflective means for evaluating individual and organizational effectiveness. This includes the ability to examine educational issues through multiple perspectives; to manipulate organizational structures for improving higher education; and to practice deliberate, informed leadership.

The 79 semester hours (s.h.)/credits program is pursued in three phases.

Phase I consists of 30 s.h/credits transferred from a master’s higher education leadership degree or equivalent coursework.

Phase II consists of 40 s.h. with 22 of these hours in core coursework dealing with understanding the importance of literature and research surrounding educational leadership (one course is taken in the fall and spring semesters) and 18 s.h. of higher education leadership coursework (taken online or in person in the summer semester).

Phase III consists of 9 s.h. of dissertation proposal, dissertation research, and dissertation defense.

While the program is 79 s.h., the 30 credits transferred from a higher education leadership program reduce the number of hours of study to 49. If appropriate, 6 additional s.h. will be transferred reducing the hours to be completed to 43 s.h. These 6 s.h. reduce the summer course total to be taken to 12 s.h., rather than 18 s.h. The program can be completed in four years.
