Mathew Huxel

Mathew Huxel (Hux) was a Hofstra alum, graduating class of 2011 with an BA in Music Merchandising. In 2014, Hux graduated from SNHU with an MBA in entrepreneurship, and in the Fall 2017 semester he returned to Hofstra to pursue a second Master’s degree, this time in Sustainability Studies. While taking courses towards his degree, Hux worked part time for The National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University®, under the direction of Director of Sustainability Research Dr. Sandra Garren, as a Graduate Research assistant. Projects Hux worked on centered around policy issues, energy issues, and community education and outreach. Hux helped write several technical reports and studies, conducted research on residential solar adoption, and helped to produce an online tool for the Village of Hempstead to help aid underprivileged residents find access to essential services, an online story-map. Hux also worked part-time as a sustainability aid with the Town of Hempstead on issues related to renewable energy technologies and energy benchmarking. In his role at Hempstead he was able to apply for two grants with the state of New York, including winning an $80,000 grant for the Town to use towards it’s 2019 update to their “Energy & Sustainability Master Plan.” Hux is currently pursuing opportunities for full-time employment in sustainability policy.

Lauren D'Orsa

Gisselle Taylor

Gisselle Taylor is a Master of Arts Sustainability major, with a concentration in Food Studies. Gisselle was born on the island of Jamaica, where her interest in the environment and food studies was shaped by observing the flourishing farming culture and community across the island. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies from the University at Buffalo in 2017. Presently, Gisselle works as a Research Assistant for The National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University® and has worked on projects including the Village of Hempstead Community Asset Map, STARS technical report, and Hofstra greenhouse and campus garden initiatives. Upon graduating, Gisselle intends to work for a federal environmental agency, with a focus in food policy and legislative work.

Lauren D'Orsa

Caroline Urrea

Carolina Urrea is a Master of Arts Sustainability major, with a concentration in green infrastructure. Carolina was born and raised on Long Island, her interest in the environment began during high school and has grown throughout the years. She received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Molloy College with minors in Chemistry and Environmental Sciences. She is currently a Research Assistant for The National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University® and has worked on projects including the Village of Hempstead Community Asset Map, Town of Hempstead Solar House and Complete Streets technical report. Upon graduating, Carolina aims to work for a local government or non-profit to promote green infrastructure practices and create a healthier urban environment.
