FIRST-GENERATION SUPPORT AND ENGAGEMENT
PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS
What is a First-Generation Student?
Hofstra defines first-generation college students as students for whom neither parent has earned a four-year college degree in the United States. Research shows that nearly one in three college students are first-generation students in their families.
Being the first in your family to attend college can be intimidating, but rest assured that you belong here! There is a community of proud first-gen students, faculty, and administrators on campus that are here to support you and help you find your place in the Pride!

UNIV 101 & WSC Cluster
First-Year students should consider enrolling in UNIV 101- The First-Gen Experience, which consists of a University Seminar (think “how to college”) class for first-year students, as well as a connected WSC 001 course – Composition I. Students may take one of the courses or both together. Students in both courses are first-generation students who benefit from taking the courses together with their first-gen peers. Both courses are instructed by faculty members who were also first-generation students.
LLC / Family Dinners
Amsterdam House in The Netherlands Complex is home to the First-Generation Living Learning Community, a campus residence hall for students first in their family to go to college. Staffed by first-gen resident assistants (RA’s), this community features additional programming facilitated by our office, including the monthly First-Gen Family Dinners. At these events, Hofstra faculty, staff, and alumni cook home-cooked meals directly in the residence hall to serve to free to students once monthly. This event is open to any Hofstra student, both residents and commuters, regardless of academic year. Join us!

Peer Mentors
You can sign up for a first-gen peer mentor! This is an upperclassmen first-generation student who has had some time on campus to figure things out and wants to help you as you start to do it too! Often, we’re able to match you with a mentor who has the same or a similar major as you so that you can ask all the tough questions and get the right insight. Applications go live each fall during welcome weekend!

Faculty & Staff Mentors
Many Hofstra faculty and staff were also first-generation students and want to help you connect and be as successful as possible. This is a trusted person who can give you advice, be asked for insight, and encourage you to be your best! Sometimes we’re even able to match you with a professor in your major area! Applications go live each fall during welcome weekend!
